max’s kansas city is the legendary New York City nightclub that became the focal point for the city’s hip artistic community from the late 60’s until the early 80’s.

In its initial period it was famously often populated by Andy Warhol’s Factory art crowd, and played host to new artists such as the Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, the Stooges, Bruce Springsteen and countless others. It became a base for jet-setters, glam rockers, and celebs, until the scene faded and it shut its doors at the end of 1974.

Reopened in 1975 under new management, Peter Crowley was hired as music director, and Max’s focus went to music. The new young bands he booked helped spawn, in tandem with CBGBs, the New York City punk scene.

In 1976 Peter compiled a studio album of acts associated with the club, ‘Max’s Kansas City 1976’, to help promote the club. It featured the first released recordings of Suicide, The Fast and Warhol-era veteran Wayne County, whose title-track gave a roll-call of many of the famous acts who’d regularly performed there. After a stint in London with the Electric Chairs, Peter returned to Max’s and continued to book interesting up and coming artists. The success of the album meant a Max’s label was now viable, and more artists were recorded.

Now the original album is to be reissued as ‘Max’s Kansas City 1976 & Beyond’, greatly extended to a selection of 25 tracks on a Record Store Day double-LP and 40 tracks on a double-CD. Additional tracks include many gems from the Max’s label and other releases of the era from both well known and unheralded Max’s scene bands.

As well as the aforementioned Suicide, Fast and Wayne County, the new extended album features the New York Dolls, the Stillettos, the Offs, the Senders, Philip Rambow, VON LMO, Iggy Pop, Knots, Cherry Vanilla, Nico, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers and Sid Vicious amongst many others. It includes many rarities and previously unreleased tracks.

Compiled by Peter Crowley, who also contributes notes detailing the history of the album. Writer, musician and Max’s scenester Jimi LaLumia provides historical overview sleeve-notes along with biographies of the artists in a 20-page booklet.

The Eden House ‘Songs For The Broken Ones’ CD & 2LP

The Eden House are a musical collective, who over their previous two albums have collaborated with a wide variety of vocalists and musicians.

On much of their third full-length album, ‘Songs For The Broken Ones’, they’ve worked with Monica Richards.  An eco-activist veteran of the DC punk scene and sometime Conflict member, she's most known as half of Faith & The Muse.  One of her previous Eden House tracks features on the new Japanese ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ manga movie soundtrack.

Other lead vocalists featured are Lee Douglas of Anathema, Louise Crane, Meg Pettitt and Kelli Ali of Sneaker Pimps.  Musicians include Bob Loveday of Penguin Café Orchestra & Van Morrison Band and Simon Hinkler of The Mission.  

The Eden House are built around the core duo of guitarist Stephen Carey of This Burning Effigy and bassist Tony Pettitt of Fields of the Nephilim together with drummer Simon Rippin of The Nephilim.  

They embellish their music with lush layers of violin and diverse female vocals, leading them to be categorised on Wikipedia as ethereal wave.  Without betraying their goth-rock roots, The Eden House expand their horizons working with top musicians from the prog-rock and trip-hop worlds to create their unique fusion sound.

Formed in 2009 they’ve previously attracted calibre collaborators such as Julianne Regan of All About Eve, Amandine Ferrari, Evi Vine, Jordan Reyne, Pink Floyd’s sound engineer Andy Jackson and Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music.  They’ve toured and headlined festivals in the UK, Germany, Belgium and Poland.

A 7”, digital single and video of the lead track ‘Verdades (Chosen version)’ b/w 'Ours Again (Resisted version)' (JUNG081) preceded the album, and live dates in the UK and Europe are currently being planned.

Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers ‘L.A.M.F. – the lost ’77 mixes’ remastered 40th anniversary edition

The Heartbreakers – Johnny Thunders, Walter Lure, Billy Rath (replacing Richard Hell) and Jerry Nolan – were formed in 1975 out of the ashes of the New York Dolls.  In 1977 they were at the centre of the London punk scene, having been invited by the Sex Pistols onto the infamous 'Anarchy Tour'.  UK punks treated the US band as rock royalty because of their New York Dolls pedigree.  Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren had briefly managed the Dolls in New York.

Signing to The Who's label, Track Records, they were treated to the best recording studios inLondon to record their only album, 'L.A.M.F.'.  But when the LP came out, there was universal criticism of the sound quality.  Journalists who'd been championing the band such as Jon Savage, Julie Burchill, Nick Kent, Tony Parsons et al criticised the 'muddy mix', and drummer Jerry Nolan left the band because of it.

Both Track Records and the Heartbreakers ran out of money and collapsed when the album didn't sell to expectations.  Manager Leee Black Childers broke into the bankrupt Track offices to retrieve the multitracks and many mixes (though not the master), leading to efforts to remix the album in 1984 and finally, after Johnny and Jerry's death, to recompile it in 1994.  Since then, it's been regularly acclaimed as a classic:-

To coincide with the album's 40th anniversary in 2017, it's been repackaged and remastered. The album comes with a 20-page booklet with the background story by Johnny Thunders' biographer Nina Antonia, together with lyrics.  Nina’s ‘Johnny Thunders – In Cold Blood’ biography is due to coincide as its first e-book publication.

Recently Walter Lure, the co-frontman, songwriter and sole surviving Heartbreaker, performed ‘L.A.M.F.’ with an all-star line-up: Clem Burke of Blondie, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements and Guns & Roses, and Wayne Kramer of the MC5.  A live gig was filmed for a DVD and album release.  More Walter dates with another illustrious line-up comprising again Clem Burke plus Mike Ness of Social Distortion and Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols took place in November/December 2017 in the USA.

Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers' classic 1977 'L.A.M.F.' album performed by members of Blondie, MC5, Replacements & Heartbreakers.

Sole surviving Heartbreaker Walter Lure was joined by Blondie's Clem Burke, The Replacements' Tommy Stinson and MC5's Wayne Kramer over two nights at New York City’s ‘Bowery Electric’ club in November 2016, and captured for posterity.

Also joining them on stage were guests including Jesse Malin of D-Generate, Liza Colby and the Dead Boys' Cheetah Chrome. The DVD features bonus material of interviews with all four band-members along with Jesse Malin.

‘L.A.M.F.’ is the album recorded by Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers in punk-era London, after they accompanied the Sex Pistols, Damned & Clash on the aborted ‘Anarchy Tour’. Being ex-members of the New York Dolls they were lauded by the young punks, and went on to record the high-octane rock’n’roll album, in retrospect labelled as a classic:

This live DVD, limited coloured vinyl LP and CD follows on from the remastered 40th anniversary edition of 'L.A.M.F.' and the reissue of an extended ‘Definitive Edition’ 4CD box set and triple-vinyl LP of the albums' many mixes and demos.

The release coincides with Walter Lure taking his 'L.A.M.F.' show on out the road again – this time with the Sex Pistols' Glen Matlock on bass, Social Distortion's Mike Ness on guitar & vocals, and again Blondie's Clem Burke on drums. They played six dates starting at the end of November 2017 covering US east and west coasts, with gigs in Los Angeles, San Diego, Brooklyn and New York.

Flamin' Groovies 'Grease' 2xLP, a limited edition in violet vinyl. Exclusive for Record Store Day, a remastered collection of the Skydog Records singles and EPs, 1973 -81.

One of America’s greatest, most influential, and legendary cult bands, who came out of the San Francisco area in 1965.  They were part of the flower-power scene but their music, 3-minute power-pop blasts, wasn’t.  Despite playing the wrong kind of music at the wrong time, and not looking the part by sporting British Invasion mop-top haircuts, they played great greasy, bluesy rock’n’roll music which has sustained a career for four decades.  Their 1968 self-produced ‘Supersnazz’ was snapped up by Epic, then the classic albums ‘Flamingo’ (’70), and ‘Teenage Head’ (’71) appeared on Kama Sutra.  

In 1973, after a UK single on UA, they issued the launch single ‘Grease’ for SKYDOG RECORDS, run by Parisian Marc Zermati from his Open Market record shop.  Followed up by ‘More Grease’ in ’74 and a third Skydog single in ’77, the punk era then brought a new appreciative audience and a hit on Sire, the classic ‘Shake Some Action’.  Later, a further final Skydog project came in 1981, when they recorded at Phil Spector’s Gold Star Studios, remaking ‘River Deep Mountain High’ in the same room as Ike & Tina’s original.

This singles collection, mostly taken from their early 70’s heyday, is packaged with original ‘Grease’ artwork by comix artist Vidal.  The double-LP comes in a gatefold sleeve, with notes by Skydog’s Marc Zermati.  It also features previously unseen 1970’s colour photos discovered in the Skydog archives.

The album has been remastered, and with some tracks produced by Dave Edmunds at Rockfield Studios and some recorded at Spector’s Gold Star Studios, ‘Grease’ is a mix of Groovie originals and classic pop covers.  It includes SLOW DEATH, RIVER DEEP MOUNTAIN HIGH, SHAKE SOME ACTION, and two covers each of Spector, Gene Clark, Jagger/Richard, and Chuck Berry.

The Eden House 'Live In Session' - a Record Store Day exclusive vinyl-only LP

The Eden House are a post-goth musical collective who’ve issued three full-length albums and headlined festivals in the UK, Germany, Belgium and Poland.  Their sound is a dramatic amalgam of Pink Floydian guitars, big dubby bass, cinematic violins, sultry female vocals, with melodies welded in a haunting, modern trip-hoppy atmosphere, and startling, expanded codas. Formed in 2008 by Stephen Carey with Tony Pettitt of Fields of the Nephilim, musicians include Simon Rippin ex-The Nefilim and Bob Loveday of Penguin Café Orchestra, and often joined by other guests including an array of exceptional singers.  

For Record Store Day 2018 they release a vinyl-only LP of exclusive 2017 live in the studio recordings, paired with a 2009 live session (it's a minimum of a six-month exclusive).

King Kurt release a 35th anniversary edition of their debut 'Ooh Wallah Wallah' LP in transparent yellow vinyl for Record Store Day. It includes their chart hit Destination Zululand, and their original version of Mack The Knife.

King Kurt first appeared on Thin Sliced Records in 1982 with the ‘Zulu Beat’ 7” in twenty different vinyl editions.  They built up a following at riotous gigs, famously strewn with all sorts of muck thrown around, amongst also offering haircuts and drinking competitions – their mission was to have fun in dour times.

Signed to Stiff Records in 1983 they hit the Top 40 with ‘Destination Zululand’.  The album Ooh Wallah Wallah, was produced by Dave Edmunds at Rockfield and entered the UK top 100.  They followed up with Top 50 singles the re-recorded ‘Mack The Knife’ and ‘Banana Banana’. 

After another album Big Cock with Stiff in 1986, they signed to Polydor for two singles and issued further albums in 1988 and 1994.

Musically they created a bizarre mix of roots rock-a-billy, funk, African rhythms and pop, with their own unique craziness and humour.  Regular TV shows increased their notoriety as the rat-fixated, nutty mohican kids of rock’n’roll.

Urban Dogs 'Urban Dogs' 35th Anniversary Issue on limited red vinyl with bonus LP of mostly unheard tracks, for Record Store Day.

Urban Dogs is the 1983 punk rock collaboration between UK Subs’ CHARLIE HARPER and The Vibrators’ KNOX, together with the Subs’ Alvin Gibbs plus Matthew Best. The bonus album comprises a previously unreleased live gig alongside 3 7" b-sides.

This is the first time on vinyl since the original release. Now in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork, a photo-collage by Knox in tribute to the Stones' Exile on Main Street cover. Following RSD it'll also be issued on CD for the first time since the 90's. 

In 1983 the UK Subs and the Vibrators found themselves at a loose end after some lengthy touring. Old friends Charlie Harper and Ian 'Knox' Carnochan got together and started making some music they shared a common love for. Along with a cover of the New York Dolls and Iggy & the Stooges, they added their own compositions that fitted.  A couple of punk classics emerged; both 'New Barbarians' and 'Limo Life' were chosen for release as 7" singles. Charlie and Knox, as the Urban Dogs went on to record a number of further albums together, and the collaboration continues to this day.

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine '101 Damnations' - a Record Store Day limited edition LP with 'dalmatian-styled' black blobs on white vinyl.  It's also issued on CD with extra tracks.

This is their 1990 breakthrough debut album – the first time on vinyl since then. It went to #1 in the indie charts and then the UK top 30 on re-release, and features the top 40 chart hit Sheriff Fatman.  Their next four LPs were all UK Top 10, one at UK #1. 

Based in South London, England, Carter and Morrison originally were in an indie band called Jamie Wednesday, issuing two singles. Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine (later shortened to Carter USM) formed when Fruitbat and Jim Bob were the only band members to turn up for a gig, and went on stage as a duo with backing tapes.

After a low-key debut single in 1988, it was the second single 'Sheriff Fatman' in 1989 that gained the band recognition. The song was written about a South London slumlord and was followed by the album 101 Damnations – a critical account of life south of the River Thames, full of black humour, cynicism, wordplay and puns. The album went straight to the top of the indie charts.

The band's gigs became well known for a wall of white stage lights that threw off enormous heat and contributed to the sweaty, stage-diving crowd scenes that became part of the band's image. They went on to be signed to Rough Trade and then Chrysalis with a series of four UK top ten albums, and were latterly with Cooking Vinyl.

Still popular, Jim Bob includes Carter songs acoustically at his gigs, such as at a sold out Shepherds Bush Empire in March 2018, and Les Carter is regularly touring the UK and Europe with his two current bands (see below).

Geraint Watkins - ‘Geraint Watkins & the Dominators’ (1979), ‘Watkins Bold As Love’ (1997) - the first two, quite different albums of his lengthy career are reissued.

‘Geraint Watkins & The Dominators’ is issued on CD and digital for the very first time, together with bonus unreleased sessions.  It’s been repackaged with unseen pics and ‘the story of the album’ notes from Andy Fairweather Low.

Geraint Watkins, singer, songwriter, sideman is for most an undiscovered treasure.  Recently known for idiosyncratic live Facebook sessions, he’s however often heard on the radio and already features in most record collections.

Geraint Watkins was born in South Wales in the 50’s, and after art school in Portsmouth he moved to London, gaining an apprenticeship in the 70’s pub rock scene.  Hearing a radio session, Andy Fairweather Low tracked Geraint down to produce an album. ‘Geraint Watkins & the Dominators’ was released on Vertigo in 1979, launching Geraint and the band as an accomplished group of intense rock’n’rollers.  All bar one track were covers, although the one Geraint composition ‘Deep in the Heart of Texas’ swiftly became a favourite and was itself often covered.

More tracks with original songs were then cut with an unrealised plan of a second album.  Later, famed producer Glyn Johns heard the band, also decided to champion them, and recorded ‘The Dominators’ for three weeks of sessions.  These comprise eight bonus tracks on the CD reissue, now heard for the first time.  The back-story to the album is told by Andy Fairweather Low in the sleeve-notes and narrated in a coming video.

Geraint and the Dominators were soon poached by producer Stuart Colman to back his new protégé Shakin’ Stevens, resulting in the biggest string of hit singles of the 80’s. They backed Dave Edmunds on a few albums and Geraint become the rock’n’roll piano and accordion player of choice.  Over the years, he’s played with leading artists such as Van Morrison, Rory Gallagher, Mark Knopfler, Nick Lowe, Status Quo, Eric Clapton, Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, Paul McCartney (and another two Beatles).  One highlight was when four of Geraint & the Dominators became Willy and the Poor Boys alongside three of the Rolling Stones and other luminaries.

Being in such high demand meant there was little time or opportunity for Geraint to pursue his own career, but all the while he was honing his craft.  Consequently, his second album was not until 1997 when Nick Lowe’s producer, Neil Brockbank heard some bedroom recordings.  Together with drummer Bob Irwin, and with Nick on bass, they put together the ‘Watkins Bold As Love’ album on their Bluefive label to showcase original Geraint compositions.  Upbeat and joyful – despite some songs coming from moments of despair – it was warmly welcomed and rewarded with a number of film soundtrack slots.  Allmusic said:

  “A delight from beginning to end – a smooth and engaging singer. Furthermore, his songs run the gamut of genres, and are all tied together with an earthy honesty and commitment. There are slow piano blues numbers, buoyant swing pieces, heart-riveting pop selections, visits to New Orleans, and more.”

This was followed in 2003 by ‘Dial W for Watkins’, which had two tracks played by Bob Dylan on his radio show; ‘In A Bad Mood’ in 2008, resulting in an appearance on BBC TV’s Later with Jools Holland and a slew of live radio sessions, and by ‘Moustique’ in 2014 which consolidated a pair of prior 10” vinyl EPs.

Geraint’s songs have been covered dozens of times including by Don McLean, Dave Edmunds, NRBQ, Pokey Lafage and The Holmes Brothers and it is his song craft, his interpretations, instinctive feel, and engaging performances that elevate him to be an equal amongst his peers.  As Jools Holland wrote in Mojo:

  “One of the great underrated songwriters. He mashes up elements of Cajun, country, blues, soul and British pop and it’s about love, death and grown-up issues, sounding like it is sung by someone who has lived a life.”

The unique 1984 collaboration.  In 1984 Hanoi Rocks were signed to CBS, about to hit the charts, and found themselves with a few weeks off.   Meanwhile The Vibrators were also taking a break, and Knox had some great new songs sitting there waiting for fate to intervene.   It did, and they got together for this much-lauded, very enjoyable album.  

Both Knox and Hanoi Rocks’ bassist Sam Yaffa (later of the New York Dolls) gave exclusive interviews for the notes, by late Melody Maker journalist Carol Clerk.

Recently unearthed ‘lost recordings’ from the early New York ska scene in 1980, in limited edition milky clear vinyl LP, CD and digital services. 

When the New York City ska scene germinated in parallel to the UK Two-Tone movement, the max’s kansas city club was at the heart of it.  The clubs pioneering record label, run by Max’s booker Peter Crowley, recorded a number of sessions in 1980, including with legendary Skatalites founder Roland Alphonso.  But only two 7” singles, by San Francisco’s The Offs and NYC’s The Terrorists, ever got issued prior to the label folding.
 
Subsequently the NY ska scene exploded, with many bands achieving great success.   Now these five studio recordings of Roland Alphonso's most well-known ska instrumentals and unissued sessions by The Terrorists and The Offs finally can be heard.

In total ten of the album's 15 tracks are issued for the very first time, and it comes with authoritative sleeve notes on the inner bag by ska writer and player ‘Marco On The Bass’, Mark Wasserman.

max’s kansas city was a legendary hive of creativity in the 70’s New York City. First as a hang-out for the Warhol/Factory set, then a second lease of life in the birth of the punk-era. Previously undocumented is its part in a fledgling NYC ska scene mirroring the UK’s Two-Tone movement.

Johnny Thunders' 1985 studio album – remixed and revamped with many unheard tracks.  Remixed by Pat Collier, it features two new tracks discovered on the album 2-inch tapes along with six unreleased outtakes.

The album features Wilko Johnson, Mike Monroe, John Perry, Patti Palladin, Henri-Paul Tortosa, Nasty Suicide, Stiv Bators, JC Carroll, Glen Matlock amongst others.  The bonus LP has one side of studio outakes and five live tracks on the other.

A Record Store Day release on April 13 2019, in a limited edition in purple and white vinyl.  It includes an insert with unseen pics, and the gatefold sleeve has comprehensive new background notes by Johnny Thunders biographer, Nina Antonia.

It's the 1985 studio album, completely remixed and revamped - as it should have sounded, and expanded with two unreleased tracks that were left off the original album. They are Countdown Love, a Jerry Nolan song regularly featured in Johnny's live shows but not used as Jerry hadn't yet issued his own version at the time; and Talk About You, a blues guitar work-out that Johnny loosely based around the Chuck Berry song. 

The bonus album has one side of six outtakes, including Copy Cat and the previously unheard Taking You Up Avenue D.  Five live tracks from the period take up the other side.  Tie Me Up with Patti Palladin was from the Crawfish sessions, therefore it's not on the 'Que Sera, Sera' multi-track tapes and doesn't appear here.  The title-track, recorded by Johnny as an after-thought in February 1986 (along with his Short Lives remix) for a single, does gain its rightful place on the album, completing 12 tracks on disc 1.

The album is remixed by The Vibrators' Pat Collier, who has brought the guitar properly up in the mix.  Johnny didn't stay in London for the original mixing sessions, and now it can be heard nearer to how we believe he intended.

Includes a 12" x 24" lyric insert full of unseen photos. The new gatefold sleeve notes by Thunders biographer Nina Antonia include new interviews with various participants, including Mike Monroe. It's a limited edition in purple & clear white vinyl.
