Hillbilly Moon Explosion Damn Right HoneyThe Hillbilly Moon Explosion

‘Damn Right Honey!’ LP & CD

Damn Right Honey!’ follows up the 2011 ‘Buy Beg Or Steal’ album that spawned the viral and vinyl hit murder ballad duet with Sparky Phillips,My Love For Evermore’.

Based around ex-patriot Englishmen Oliver Baroni and Duncan James with chanteuse Emanuela Hutter, they’ve long been showing Zurich how to rock’n’roll.  Now having conquered both their domestic residence and neighbouring France, as part of a 10-nation European tour they returned to the UK in May and visit again in August 2013:

9. London Camden Underworld; 10. Cardiff Bogies; 11. Blackpool Rebellion Festival.

As their name suggests The Hillbilly Moon Explosion’s roots are in rockabilly; however they’ve always been just as comfortable with 60’s pop and smoky ballads.  They’ve now have widened their template to embrace all roots Americana.

‘Damn Right Honey’ features two distinctive guest singers joining them for duets.  Rockabilly stalwart Paul Ansell, the chosen vocalist of Scotty Moore, contributes to the single ‘Flying High, Moaning Low’.  And Sparky Phillips returns to join Emanuela on ‘Northern Crown’.  For the first time they’ve engaged a brass section, and are also aided and abetted by BJ Cole and Geraint Watkins amongst others.  The album is again produced by Greg Townson of US bands The Hi-Risers and Los Straightjackets, and was recorded at Goldtop Studio in Tooting, South London.

First formed some years ago, their first three albums were issued on various rockabilly labels.  Relaunched with their fourth, ‘Buy Beg Or Steal’, they embarked on a busy schedule touring clubs and festivals across Europe, including touring with Jeff Beck.  In the UK last year they appeared at disparate events such as for the Swiss Olympic team, the Rebellion Punk Festival and the Jazz Café.

Tracks: Drive This Truck No More, Perfida, Flying High Moaning Low, Cool Spring Breeze, Goldmine, Westbound Train, Die In Style, I Hear You Knockin’, Ellie Lou, Motorhead Girl, Northern Crown, Sky In Your Eyes. LP bonus track: Pack Lunch.

The Waldos 'Rent Party'

The Waldos Rent Party coverThe Waldos ‘Rent Party’ + bonus tracks CD

WALTER LURE was the co-frontman and songwriter for The Heartbreakers, responsible for songs such as One Track Mind, Get Off The Phone, All By Myself and Too Much Junkie Business.  He formed The Waldos in the late 80’s, and their album ‘Rent Party’, produced by The Dictators’ Andy Shernoff, was released in 1994.

Rebounding from the punk maelstrom and bad habits, Walter famously survived by getting a job on Wall Street.  However, many of his band-mates did not survive – in addition to Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan, The Waldos’ Tony Coiro and Charlie Sox and Walter’s brother Ritchie Lure from his earlier outfit The Heroes, all passed on.

‘Rent Party’ features three songs known from The Heartbreakers era – the live favourite Seven Day Weekend, Jerry Nolan’s Countdown Love and the early Heartbreakers Walter Lure composition, Flight.  In all there’s six Lure compositions along with a couple from the late Tony Coiro, together with sixties covers of Claudine Clark’s Party Lights and Ray Charles’ Busted.

The Waldos on 'Rent Party' are Joey Pinter (guitar), Tony Coiro (guitar & vocals), Jeff West (drums) and Walter Lure (guitar & vocals).

Extras on this CD and digital reissue are an early Waldos 7” from 1991 (with Charlie Sox on drums), and a rare 1978 single by NY punk teens The Blessed whom Walter joined inbetween Heartbreakers tours.  The Blessed are Billy Stark (vocals), Howie Pyro (Bass), Brad 'BJ' Barnett (drums) and Walter Lure (guitar, piano, vocals).

Walter Lure and The Waldos had a short UK Tour in August 2013, playing the Blackpool Rebellion Festival as well as Bristol and London.  Walter regularly takes time off his day-job to perform around the world.

Reviewed on Allmusic, ‘Rent Party’ was described as: -
“as much fun as a CD can have with its clothes on.  This platter exceeds expectations.  Rent Party has several ‘new’ Walter Lure tunes on it, all of which don't miss a beat from the old days.  Produced by Andy Shernoff (Dictators), this is a fully realized piece of work.  For lack of a simpler description, think of it as the follow-up (over 15 years later) to the Heartbreakers' LAMF album.  Somehow Lure has maintained his spirit and vision through it all and he's managed to stay alive.”

Tracks: Cry Baby, Love That Kills, Sorry, Seven Day Weekend, Never Get Away, Golden Days, Flight, Countdown Love, Busted, Crazy Little Baby, Crazy Bout Your Love, Party Lights.  Bonus tracks: Crazy Little Baby (7” vinyl version), Cry Baby (7” vinyl version), THE BLESSED: Deep Frenzy, American Bandstand.

Hillbilly Moon Explosion nine vinyl discsHillbilly Moon seven-inch Explosion

Seven inch singles prove to be a hit.

The Hillbilly Moon Explosion 7" 'My Love For Evermore' is now on its seventh pressing.

Together with the coloured vinyl limited editions of the new 'Flying High Moaning Low' and the 'Maniac Lover' EP limited editions (black one not pictured), they make a pretty picture.

Got yours yet?

'My Love For Evermore' is a duet with Sparky Phillips from Demented Are Go, produced at Goldtop Studio. People have described it as a 'murder ballad', but the lyrics are ambiguous.

It also made a big impact on Youtube.  The video is currently on 2.7 million views (whoo - now on 5.6!) and the song inspired 20 or so cover version tributes there. (Actually more - there's 30 covers collected here). Not to mention the tattoo craze. Perhaps the song is becoming a global obsession...

You can find out why there's such a fuss about the track, here below: -

Geraint Watkins 'Moustique' coverGERAINT WATKINS 'Moustique'

'Warm, witty and heartfelt, dispensing alternately rueful and wry nuggets of wisdom from the badlands of middle age.' – Graeme Thompson, The Word.

'A suave refinement of deep-seated influences... matching a spare sophisticated style with a connoisseur's touch. Astringent, observational songs seal the deal.' – Gavin Martin, Uncut.

Geraint Watkins, the acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician, is to release his fourth solo studio album 'Moustique' on both CD and LP in early 2014.

His previous album 'In A Bad Mood' received a very warm reception and Geraint was rewarded with six live BBC radio sessions and a spot on the 'Later... with Jools Holland' BBC TV show.

Jools was quoted in Mojo: 'One of the great underrated songwriters. He mashes up elements of Cajun, country, blues, soul and British pop and it's about love, death and grown-up issues, sounding like it is sung by someone who has lived a life.' Bob Dylan is another of the many who have praised him, with a number of plays on his 'Theme Time Radio Hour'.

Geraint was born in South Wales in the 1950's. After an art-school education he moved to London. Early records with a couple of bands gained him attention, then on his solo albums he excelled – 'Watkins Bold As Love' in 1997 (Bluefive), 'Dial 'W' For Watkins' in 2004 (Proper) and 'In A Bad Mood' in 2008 (Goldtop).

His talents have attracted much admiration from other musicians including the top names in popular music. Consequently he's much in demand as a hired hand and has played and recorded with Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Mark Knopfler, Nick Lowe and many more. He fronted three of the Rolling Stones and others in Willie & the Poor Boys, and regularly tours as a key member of both Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings and Nick Lowe's band.

In 2012 Nick Lowe chose him to open on his band tour across Europe and Australia. Geraint followed that with headline dates in Spain, Sweden, Norway and the UK.

For his solo work, Geraint has attracted some of the best players around. On his recent London live shows he was accompanied by a seven-piece band: Kate St. John (cor anglais), Matt Holland (trumpet), Martin Winning (saxophone), Johnny Scott (guitar), Matt Radford (double bass) and Robert Trehern (drums), who all feature on the album recordings.

'Moustique' was recorded at Goldtop Studio, Tooting and will be marked by a return to live work, with dates to be announced shortly.

Release date: March 17th 2014. Cat. No: AU79CD/LP011 Goldtop Recordings.  PR: Will McCarthy.

Looking For Johnny - the legend of Johnny Thunders

Looking For Johnny posterLooking For Johnny - the legend of Johnny Thunders

CHIP BAKER films in association with JUNGLE RECORDS presents a DANNY GARCIA FILM:

a documentary on the life of the late New York Dolls and Heartbreakers guitarist

Johnny Thunders was the legendary hard-living rock’n’roll guitarist who inspired glam-metal, punk and the music scene in general.
‘Looking For Johnny’ is a 90-minute film that documents Thunders' career from his beginnings to his tragic death in 1991.

When Johnny Thunders died in New Orleans on April 23rd 1991, he left behind a mystery. Though MTV and international broadsheets reported the guitarist’s demise, for many in the mainstream, Thunders was perceived as an enigmatic outlaw. He was adored by a legion of devotees and cited as an influence by at least three successive generations of musicians. Thunders refused to play the corporate game and was both elevated and damned for it.

‘Looking for Johnny’ is the creation of the documentary maker, Danny Garcia (‘The Rise & Fall of The Clash’). The young Spanish filmmaker was seized by a question that wouldn’t let go – "just who was Johnny Thunders?"  He spent 18 months travelling across the USA and Europe, filming interviews with fifty of the people who were closest to Johnny, building a compelling narrative drawn from first hand testimonies.

The film examines Johnny Thunders’ career from the early 70's as a founding member of the influential New York Dolls, the birth of the punk scene with The Heartbreakers in both New York City and London, and later incarnations including Gang War and The Oddballs. It also explores Johnny’s unique musical style, his personal battle with drugs and theories on the circumstances of his death in a New Orleans hotel in 1991 at age 38.

Interviewees include Sylvain Sylvain, Lenny Kaye, Walter Lure, Billy Rath, Bob Gruen, Terry Chimes, Alan Vega, Peter Perrett, Sami Yaffa, BP Fallon, three of his late managers: Marty Thau, Leee Black Childers and Malcolm McLaren, and many others.

The film includes forty songs with historic film of Johnny with live performances from all periods, including unseen New York Dolls and Heartbreakers footage and photos. Cult filmmakers Bob Gruen, Don Letts, Patrick Grandperret, Rachael Amadeo and others contribute classic archive footage, helping illustrate the charisma, chaos and heartbreak inherent to the guitarist.

Premiere showings took place in May and June 2014 across USA and Europe, including New York City, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Stockholm, New Orleans, Dallas, Toronto, Boston, Washington DC, Gloucester MA, San Francisco, Madrid, Barcelona and elsewhere, with more events to follow.

Now a second leg of screenings is being arranged starting in September 2014.  See below for details and Facebook and websites for updates.

The film will be issued in October 2014 on DVD and digital services.  Distributed in North America by MVD.  Cat no. MVD6544D.

Hillbilly Moon Explosion 'Call Me' 7" coverThe HILLBILLY MOON EXPLOSION 'Call Me' / 'Bop Til You Drop' 7"

Two brand new tracks - a 7" vinyl and digital single release, not on any album.

A Blondie cover, backed with a Ramones cover, given the Hillbilly Moon unique treatment.

There's also a new video of 'Call Me' to check out, here. The 7" is now in its second limited edition of 500, in clear vinyl, as the initial white vinyl pressing sold out in the week of release.

Based around ex-patriot Englishmen Oliver Baroni and Duncan James together with Italian/Swiss chanteuse Emanuela Hutter, they’ve long been showing Zurich how to rock’n’roll.  Having conquered both their domestic residence and neighbouring France, in 2013 they made a full, 10-nation European tour.

Their single My Love For Evermore featuring Demented Are Go’s Sparky Phillips has inspired dozens of both cover versions and tattoos, along with seven limited 7” pressings and many millions of video views.

In 2014 they’ve been relatively quiet, their only forays being Swiss and French festivals, gigs with Wanda Jackson and a French tour. But they found time to record this great new one-off single – and film the video to accompany.

In 2015 they're working on an interesting new recording project together with a certain well-known French chanteuse, and then will be recording their own, sixth Hillbilly Moon Explosion studio album.

Heartbreakers Live at Max's Vols 1&2 2LP mock-upHEARTBREAKERS Live at Max’s Kansas City, Vols 1 & 2 (2xLP)

A Record Store Day release on multi-coloured vinyl of the classic live album, with the rarely heard Volume 2 added for the first time on vinyl.

Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan formed the Heartbreakers out of the ashes of the New York Dolls in 1975.  Gaining infamy in London touring with the Sex Pistols on the Anarchy tour of ’76, they went on to produce just one album, the classic L.A.M.F. in 1977.

The Heartbreakers split up When Track Records folded early in 1978.  But in the fall of ’78, Johnny Thunders, Billy Rath and Walter Lure found themselves in New York and decided to do a couple of gigs for ‘old times sake’ and some ‘chump change’.

Jerry had moved on to play with The Idols and Sid Vicious, so they got together with drummer Ty Styx for some farewell gigs at Max’s Kansas City.  The resulting album was issued in 1979 on Max’s Kansas City Records in the US and Beggars Banquet in the UK.

It sold well, so Max’s Tommy Dean and Peter Crowley decided to record a Volume 2. A long weekend of shows was booked, this time with original drummer Jerry Nolan, but ‘chemical imbalances’ ruined all but half of the last show.  Beggars turned down the tapes, and Volume 2 remained unreleased, appearing only briefly on CD in the mid-90’s.

Now for the first time, both volumes are brought together on double-vinyl, in a Record Store Day release of limited, spattered red, yellow & black double vinyl.  The audio has been repaired and remastered by Peter Crowley.

Disc 1 is the original 1978 live album and Disc 2 is Volume 2 recorded 1979 but unreleased until 1995 and never before on vinyl.  The album comes in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork, together with an insert with notes by Johnny Thunders’ biographer Nina Antonia.

VOLUME 1:  Side One  Intro, Milk Me, Chinese Rocks, Get Off The Phone, London, Take A Chance, One Track Mind.  Side Two  All By Myself, Let Go, I Love You, Can’t Keep My Eyes On You, I Wanna Be Loved, Do You Love Me.
VOLUME 2:  Side Three  All By Myself, Pirate Love, Too Much Junkie Business.   Side Four  Don’t Mess With Cupid, So Alone.

Family Fodder Frenzy

Alig Fodder with Electric Oud

FAMILY FODDER have various albums reissued on CD, LP and digital, coinciding with a cover version of one of their songs.

Family Fodder, best known for their string of idiosyncratic, playful experimental post-punk singles between 1979-82 such as Debbie Harry, Savoir Faire, Film Music and Playing Golf (all found on the 'More Great Hits' CD) have a torrent of activity in late 2015.

The early recordings are being given a respectful reissue treatment on both CD and LP by German label Staubgold. ‘Monkey Banana Kitchen’ came out with extras last year. Now in December comes ‘Sunday Girls (Director’s Cut)’, the original mini-album plus an obscurity released as ‘Frank Sumatra’ and various singles as extras.

This comes after US band YACHT releases a souped-up electro-pop cover version of I Want To Fu<k You Til I’m Dead on Downtown Records on October 16, following in the footsteps of Unrest and Zion Train who’ve both also paid tribute to Family Fodder’s unique song-craft. YACHT are currently touring the US and then in November visit the UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Turkey on a European tour.

Further, on November 20th, two past Family Fodder albums: All Styles (1983), and Water Shed (2000), both either with extras or in ‘Director’s Cut’ editions, are being made available digitally for the first time:-

'All Styles' is a double-album with each song designated a different musical genre.  It was a communal effort from the whole of the Family Fodder entourage of the time. It comes with bonus tracks from the 'Coral' single.

'Water Shed' is a reunion album with original French chanteuse Dominique Levillain together with other original Family Fodder members, first issued by the USA Dark Beloved Cloud label.

And the obscure 1996 album 'Foreverandever' is being readied for CD and digital release in the New Year 2016.  This little-heard gem was originally released clandestinely in Italy under Alig Fodder's alter-ego, 'Johnny Human'.  It's now been condensed, revamped and adapted into the outstanding Family Fodder album it always threatened to be.

Always productive, in recent years Fodder godfather Alig Fodder has collaborated with Psapp and David Shrigley, has toured Europe with an early Fodder line-up, and issued new Family Fodder albums together with vocalist Darlini Singh Kaul, daughter of original Fodder singer Dominique Levillain, on new media pioneers The State 51 Conspiracy label.

Nomadic in person as well as in his music, Alig Fodder is often to be found in the Greek island of Crete, still investigating the outer limits of music whilst enjoying the Mediterranean environment.

"Family Fodder exude an exhilarating sense that everything was possible, that there weren't any limits to imagination and humour. The scope of their musical range remains as dizzying and exciting as it once was." (Time Out New York)

Conflict Complete Singles 2xLP vinyl sleeve CONFLICT ‘There Must Be Another Way’ - the singles (2x vinyl LP)

All of Conflict’s studio singles on double vinyl LP for the first time. Comes with an A2 size, 2-sided poster insert with singles info & discography and gatefold sleeve with lyrics to all 24 tracks. Conflict are still active, playing huge festival gigs in 2015 in USA & around Europe.

Conflict have been described as the world’s foremost activist anarchist punk band. First heard on their mentors Crass’s label, their ‘To A Nation of Animal Lovers’ EP inspired anti-vivisection, anti-hunt campaigns.

Espousing direct action and numerous political causes, on their own Mortarhate label they dominated the top of the indie singles and albums charts through the eighties.  Gigs turned into full-scale riots, with hundreds arrested.  Police banned them from performing in the UK, so they went underground and abroad.

Still active but quieter in the 90’s, then a resurgence of interest in the punk movement regenerated them in the 21st century and they remain active today, in 2015 playing large punk festivals across the UK, USA and Europe.

24 TRACKS:  Custom Rock, Mighty And Superior, To Whom It May Concern, Climbing The Stairs, These Colours Don’t Run, The Serenade Is Dead, The Positive Junk, The System Maintains, Berkshire C*nt, Meat Means Murder, Whichever Way You Want It, Statement, This Is Not Enough, Neither Is This, Conflict, I’ve Had Enough, War Games, Blind Attack, The Final Conflict, The War Of Words, Now You’ve Put Your Foot In It, From St. Paul’s To Seattle, Carlo Giuliani, A Gaping Hole. CONFLICT – a history of insurgence

Conflict hold a unique and fascinating position as a punk band, being hugely influential in the anarchist movement and inspiring many to direct action in numerous alternative life-style causes, such as Anti-Globalisation and the Animal Liberation Front.  In the 80’s their records went straight to the top of the indie charts.  One even made the national chart at no. 33, causing chart commentator Alan Jones to note this was one band that would never ever be stocked next to the pick’n’mix in Woolies.

Preaching their intense insurrectionary anti-state politics at gigs, they whipped up audiences into a riotous frenzy.  Arrests after gigs were in the dozens: 23 in Kingston, 24 at Surbiton, 32 at Leeds University (when Chumbawumba supported), culminating in the Brixton Academy riot that hit the front pages of the national newspapers: ‘52 PUNKS HELD IN BRIXTON – SIX POLICE HURT’.  Booked on a stolen Rough Trade letterhead, the Academy attracted 4,000 punks to hear Conflict perform together with Crass’ front-man Steve Ignorant.  Leaflets with maps of Brixton showing ‘targets’ such as McDonalds and Barclays Bank were handed out to the crowd…

Following that major incident, Conflict were effectively banned in the UK.  Any promoter booking them had a police visit and a huge ‘security’ bill imposed on them, and their insurance companies would withdraw cover.  Conflict continued with overseas tours and a few rave-style events where the secret venue was found after charades to confuse the police, but became semi-dormant in the early 90’s.

Starting out on their mentor’s Crass’ label Corpus Christi, with a nod to the militant side of The Clash, Conflict inhabited an idealistic punk world, where records had to say ‘Pay No More Than…’ and all gigs were benefits for either causes or bust-funds.   Campaigning groups contacts are often advertised on sleeves - or otherwise the home addresses of vivisectionists and turkey-farmers such as Bernard Matthews.  They soon formed their own Mortarhate Records label, issuing many Conflict albums over the years and also releases from many other bands sympathetic to the cause.

New Model Army were famously castigated in song for signing to a major, the accusation rubbed in by a live benefit album with its title appropriated from NMA’s anti-heroin slogan as ‘Only Stupid Bastards Help EMI’.  The general music business was scorned; records were never advertised and with the message being bigger than the band there has never been a promotional ‘group photograph’ of the band.

In the USA, the Seattle riots and the ‘straight-edge’ punk movement accredited Conflict as inspiration, giving an incentive to resume activities and leading to huge interest in their Mortarhate label catalogue there and a short-term US license.  A headline gig at a punk festival in Milton Keynes in front of 3,500 brought them back in October 2000, followed by regular tours and headline festivals in USA and Europe.

Wayne County & the Backstreet Boys 'Max's Kansas City 1976' 7" coverWAYNE COUNTY and the Backstreet Boys ‘Max’s Kansas City 1976’ 7”

Wayne County (later Jayne) with her 1976 roll-call of the famous NYC club. Reissued on limited white vinyl 7” to herald the ‘Max’s’ 40th anniversary album. Coincides with the recreation of the ‘Max’s’ club in Martin Scorcese & Mick Jagger’s coming ‘Vinyl’ HBO series.

In 1976 the New York City club ‘Max’s Kansas City’ entered a new musical phase, with the underground movement that became punk developing within its walls.  Resident DJ Wayne County wrote a song for the club cataloguing the new bands that regularly played there: New York Dolls, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Television, Blondie, Iggy Pop, the Heartbreakers and many more.

The single is issued as a taster for the 40th anniversary of the ‘Max’s Kansas City 1976’ compilation album, due for a much-extended reissued in 2016 on double-vinyl and CD.  Alongside Wayne County it features Suicide, Pere Ubu, Cherry Vanilla, The Fast and others; it’s now expanded with 20 more bands from the seminal scene.

Over the years the Max’s Kansas City club has become ever more legendary.  Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger recently recreated the club for filming their upcoming ‘Vinyl’ HBO series, set in the mid-70’s New York City rock scene.  It debuts in 2016.

Wayne County is rock’n’roll’s first transgender singer, a veteran of Max’s since 1969. She had been at the Stonewall riots and was a flatmate of ‘Warhol superstars’ Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling and Jackie Curtis, appearing in and writing plays.  Seeing her starring in one, Andy Warhol chose her for the lead role in ‘Pork’, which in 1971 came to the London Roundhouse, where the cast befriended the Hunky Dory-era David Bowie.

Later she signed to David Bowie’s Mainman management, front-page news in 1973, but the two-year relationship ended leaving nothing but the germ of Bowie’s ‘Rebel Rebel’.  By 1976 she was back DJ-ing at Max’s for the nascent punk scene, and naturally became the veteran MC of the scene, contributing three songs including this title track on the club’s ‘new bands’ ‘Max’s Kansas City 1976’ compilation.

In 1977 she relocated with the Electric Chairs to the London punk scene, and made a deal with Safari Records.  Her anthem, ‘If You Don’t Want To Fu<k Me Baby, Fu<k Off’, became a huge single in the alternative charts and she featured in Derek Jarman’s punk film, ‘Jubilee’.

The debut album ‘The Electric Chairs’ alongside the ‘Blatantly Offensive’ EP gained notoriety, launching a career of many more albums and extensive touring.  From 1980 her records were released under the name Jayne County.

Wayne County

A JAYNE COUNTY / WAYNE COUNTY biography

Growing up in a small rural community in Georgia with parents from a strict religious background, she discovered a liking for dressing crazy and confusing people. Drawn to New York’s subterranean bohemian society, Wayne was soon to participate in the famous Stonewall riots. Hanging around the Max’s Kansas City rock’n’roll scene led to Wayne sharing flats with Warhol superstars Jackie Curtis, Candy Darling and Holly Woodlawn, all immortalised in Lou Reed’s ‘Walk On The Wild Side’.

In 1971 Wayne took a lead role of ‘Vulva’ (Viva) in the Andy Warhol play ‘Pork’, based on tapes of his ‘gallery of superstars’ conversations. The play moved to London for a scandalous, scatalogical run at the Roundhouse – “makes ‘Oh Calcutta’ and ‘Hair’ look like a vicar’s tea party” fumed the News of the World. The company were befriended by a yet-to-be-famous, befrocked David Bowie, fascinated by their Warhol connections and offbeat sexuality.

Back in New York, Wayne became a resident Max’s DJ, got a band, Queen Elizabeth together, and became a fixture of the club scene along with the New York Dolls, stretching the limits of vulgarity. The Bowie friendship led to Wayne being signed by the Mainman management company, announced as front-page news by the UK’s Melody Maker in 1973. They filmed a never-released ‘Live at the Trucks’ extravaganza and almost recorded an album with Mick Ronson, but eventually that gravy-train dried up.

Wayne went back to DJ-ing at Max’s, formed a new band the Backstreet Boys, started taking hormones, and became immersed in the new underground scene at Max’s and CBGB’s that would become punk. Max’s booker Peter Crowley consolidated the scene by arranging festivals and a compilation album that featured three tracks from Wayne. The title-track ‘Max’s Kansas City 1976’ 7” was her debut record release.

In 1977 she relocated to the London punk scene with a new band, the Electric Chairs. Wayne was welcomed in London and after an Illegal Records single a deal with Safari Records was secured. Her anthem. ‘If You Don’t Want To Fu<k Me Baby, Fu<k Off’, became the biggest-selling single in the alternative charts and was followed by a performance in the Derek Jarman’s iconic punk film, ‘Jubilee’. The debut album, ‘The Electric Chairs’ alongside the ‘Blatantly Offensive’ EP gained notoriety and the band toured the UK and Europe extensively.

The album ‘Storm The Gates Of Hell’ followed, which like the first was produced by Martin Birch. Wayne then began spending time in Berlin and started rearranging her gender. Next came the album ‘Things Your Mother Never Told You’, produced by experimental artist David Cunningham. After more touring, back in Berlin her stage name became Jayne, and the live album ‘Rock and Roll Resurrection’ was the first released under the name Jayne County.

In Berlin a lead acting role in the film ‘City Of Lost Souls’ directed by Rosa Von Prohheim, along with songs on the soundtrack, was one of a number of screen appearances. Further live and ‘best of’ albums appeared on Safari before a new album ‘Private Oyster’ on Revolver, as ever along with more globetrotting. A new UK band were found to back Jayne, and ‘Betty Grable’s Legs’ appeared on Jungle in 1989, ‘Goddess of Wet Dreams’ on ESP in ‘93, ‘Deviation’ in ’95 on Royalty and yet more albums in the 21st Century. Her autobiography, ‘Man Enough To Be A Woman’ with Rupert Smith was published in 1995.

One year earlier, THE HEARTBREAKERS had arrived in London to join the Sex Pistols on the ‘Anarchy’ tour.

This last date of their European tour was to be their very last as a band – until the reunions of course. Drummer Jerry Nolan had already jumped ship; his substitute is The Clash’s Terry Chimes. The gig was filmed for a movie that was never to be – this is the soundtrack recording.

LIMITED EDITION of 1,500 worldwide in mustard vinyl, for Record Store Day 2016. Plus A4 BATACLAN POSTER INSERT of the gig together with Marc Zermati’s recollections.

BERNARD THORRENT (R.I.P) WHO ALSO BOOKED MOST BANDS PLAYING THE GIBUS IS THE PROMOTER FOR THE NIGHT.
JOHNNY’S AT HIS BEST, JUST AS HE WAS 4 YEARS BEFORE WITH THE DOLLS, WHERE THE SHOW ENDED UP IN A RIOT. SAME PLACE, SAME HIGH ENERGY, SAME ULTIMATE NEW-YORK ROCK’N ROLL. Iggy and the Stooges 'Metallic KO' LP gold sleeveIggy and the Stooges ‘Metallic K.O.’ - the original 1976 LP - the notorious ‘Last Ever Iggy & the Stooges Show’

40th Anniversary Limited Editions in Silver & Gold vinyl and sleeve versions, with poster.

‘Metallic K.O.’ is the remarkable album of Iggy & The Stooges confrontational ‘last ever gig’ (until their reunion almost 30 years later).  Effectively the fourth Stooges album with then brand new and unheard songs, it was released in 1976 three years after ‘Raw Power’ while Iggy was in limbo.  Soon after the gig Iggy checked into a mental hospital.

The sound of kamikaze Iggy provocatively abusing his audience and then dodging eggs and bottles thrown by a biker gang enhanced Iggy’s reputation in the embryonic punk scene as the Punk Godfather.  Nothing like it had been heard before.  It became a must-have album and far out-sold the first three Stooges albums, with sales of over 100,000.

It is now re-issued on vinyl with the original LP track list - previously it had been extended to a double-CD with the complete 1973 & 1974 shows it is taken from.  In the 2007 CD re-mastering, an original tape-speed error was discovered and corrected – so now for the first time on vinyl the album can be heard at the correct pitch.

The album contains Iggy Pop’s story of the events surrounding the gigs as well as contemporaneous reports from Nick Kent, Giovanni Dadomo and Lester Bangs.  An essential album in Iggy’s history.

Nick Kent said: ‘I’m convinced that side two is a masterpiece’ and Lester Bangs said: ‘It’s the only rock album I know where you can actually hear hurled beer bottles breaking against guitar strings’.

Hillbilly Moon Explosion 'With Monsters & Gods' coverThe Hillbilly Moon Explosion ‘With Monsters and Gods’ LP & CD

‘With Monsters and Gods’ is The Hillbilly Moon Explosion’s sixth album, and certainly their best.  Who knew that rock’n’roll could still be so exhilarating … and musically diverse?

A half-English 4-piece hidden away in the unlikely habitat of Switzerland, they’ve honed their craft without distraction for many years.  Searching for the right sound they’ve previously recorded in San Diego, Camden and Tooting, but for this album they went back to the local Swiss studio where they made their early rockabilly albums, allowing more time to get it spot on.

The line-up is chanteuse Emanuela Hutter, Oliver Baroni on vocals and stand-up bass, Duncan James on guitar and Sylvain Petite on drums; ‘With Monsters and Gods’ is also embellished by Oliver’s latent piano skills.  The esteemed Pete Thomas provided saxophone, he also played live with the band alongside Geraint Watkins on keyboards on their recent European tour.

The band are quite an online and vinyl phenomenon, boosted by the ‘My Love For Evermore’ single, a duet with Spark Phillips of Demented Are Go, who also guests on ‘With Monster & Gods’.  Tattoos of ‘My Love For Evermore’ have become a thing, with dozens of fans comparing photos on the band’s Facebook page.  At least 30 cover-versions add to the nearly seven millions of views of the song’s viral video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/2rlYPb2plaY?t=15s and the 7” vinyl sold out a remarkable seven pressings.

Much revered in France, they were recently hired to help resurrect the career of the film star and singer Arielle Dombasle.  She recorded with the band an album of Hillbilly Moon cover versions, out now as ‘French Kiss’ on Universal.

Last in the UK in 2013, they straddle genres with ease, playing divergent gigs such as the Jazz Café, the Punk Rebellion Festival, Boomtown Festival, and as guests of the Swiss national team at the London Olympics.  Their European tours embrace ten countries and this Spring they set out on the road again in support of this new album.
